I love Dreamweaver. I started off in Web Design back in 1996 (I think) using Adobe GoLive, but from the moment I touched Macromedia Dreamweaver, I never went back.
When Adobe announced that they were buying Macromedia there was never even a thought in my mind that they would drop Dreamweaver and instead go with Adobe Golive. What’s going to happen now though?
Just like InDesign and Quark, Apple and Microsoft, Yahoo and Google - competition drives innovation. Sure, this makes room for another up-and-comer. I just don’t see anyone trying to up-and-come though. I don’t see another great web design application in the wings, in the dugout, or even in the ball park, that is waiting to swoop in now.
Sure, Adobe is going to add more bells and whistles at first, as they combine what is best in Dreamweaver with scraps of what is good from Golive, but after this next update, will there be any real will to innovate, to think outside the box, hell - to crush that box and make it cry for mommy. I just don’t see the internal drive in Adobe to do it.
So I beg of you software manufacturers, get your butts in gear and make us something wonderful. This is your opportunity to shine, or we will all suffer the fate of merely incremental improvements, and some more bells and whistles and creativity will die a slow bland dial-up like death.
